The Ancestors of the early Lairds were Norsemen. They came to Normandy in long-ships with Rollo (ca . 700) and conquered the region.

They laid seige to the city of Paris and defeated Charles the Simple, who was King of France under the holy Roman Empire. In order to raise the seige of Paris, Charles the Simple gave Rollo his daughter as a wife, and she converted Rollo to Christianity.

Rollo was a very powerful man, but refused the title of King of France and became the Duke of Normandy.
